Thirteen Photos from 2013
2013 was a year of major change in my career. Leaving a staff job at a newspaper that I worked at since 1999 meant starting over in a lot of ways. Looking back at what I shot over the past 12 months I put together a group of 13 of my favorite images from the year. Someone else may have chosen 13 totally different photos, but here is what I came up with in no particular order.
While still on staff at the Daily News, I was assigned to a story about a new real estate development in the Hamptons on the eastern end of Long Island. The real kicker was our mode of transport. We flew in a sea plane out of the East River to get there. This was my view down at LaGuardia as we flew over.
Game 1 of the NBA playoff series between the New York Knicks and Indiana Pacers. I was fortunate to catch Kenyon Martin's reaction after a dunk with my remote camera. This 1 dunk yielded 3 or 4 good photos from the remote, but this one is my favorite.
The skies opened up over Yankee Stadium and this was my favorite image of Hiroki Kuroda walking off for the rain delay.
The assignment from Bloomberg News was to document the Maple Ridge Wind Farm in upstate New York. There is something about the juxtaposition of a horse and buggy and wind turbines that I like.
I was asked by the New York Times to photograph a race horse named Deweycolorintheline at the farm where she trains in Orange County, NY. It was a great assignment and I had so much fun on it. I like this detail photo from the horses bath.
The assignment from Bloomberg News was to photograph Metro North Commuters. I shot in a bunch of locations for this but this image of the train emptying out at Grand Central Terminal stood out to me.
I was sent to shoot Army play Stanford for Getty Images. West Point is an amazing place to visit and a great venue to shoot a college football game.
The thing I like most about this photo is looking at the faces of all the people in the crowd. Especially the guy right over the ball taking it upon himself to make sure no one interferes.
This portrait of Kevin Garnett was made during media day for the Brooklyn Nets. You are given a very brief amount of time with each player, sometimes less than a minute. It is great when you have a guy like Garnett who knows the show and gives you exactly what you need in the first 10 seconds.
The light was sneaking though an opening in the stadium and coming right at us. It was one of those times when you really wish you were not stuck in a photo well. It would have been nice to be able to move around a little more to work with the light. I just like the feeling the light gives to this photo.
Victor Cruz and the rest of the New York Giants take the field before the start their game against the Denver Broncos.
The same Bloomberg News assignment to photograph Metro North commuters allowed me the opportunity to shoot through an open window in the glass hallway that runs across the top of Grand Central Terminal.
The assignment was great. Make interesting aerial photos of New York. I used my tilt shift to isolate the span of the bridge and the flag from the background.
